Evaluation and reflection of FMP

For the final major project, to be honest, it’s better than the project of last unit–physical computing. In this project, I had lots of challenges and learnt a lot as well. For the project, I communicated my idea through myth stuff. Last night is the Private View of the whole exhibition at London College of Communication.

During the process of this project, I learnt how to bring something and applicate to my discipline, tried 3d workshop and learnt how to use cinema 4D software, and knew more things about anxieties.

However, I saw disadvantages through this project. The ability of time management is really poor, I am not actually know how to make a timetable and plan something, that I have not assign time well for blog updated, portfolio, thesis, project documentation and project development. I was really tired when I worked at 3D workshop, every day when I went back home, I was too tired to do anything except sleeping. I spent so much time at workshops; Although I always could find some interesting starting points but no ideas how to develop them well and completely. About the part of research, I did primary research too much but second research, I have not read some articles about anxieties from social medias like webs and newspapers. I am also lack of the ability of induction and summarising, I am not really know how to pick main points from the pile of research and re-construct them.

About the degree show, at the beginning when I introduced my project to the audience, I am not sure, maybe I said too much so that audience lost their patience…I should describe them within 4 sentences if they want to know more detail, I try to explain more to them in order to make it more clear, but audiences skip me and directly saw the description of the project; for the title of the project, I should explain the phrase, what is ‘gig economy’, but I did not, so that some audience did not know what is ‘gig economy’. Although I have an audio for the audience, but I always forgot it because I just focus on the eye-contact with the audience but the headphone. Another thing is, all of the objects of the project are tangible, but the audience did not put them up and just bowing themselves to have a look. I forgot to tell them touching these objects, rubbing them to get luck, that will be more similar to the starting point of the project and express the meaning of lucky charms well. For next step, I will research myth culture and develop my project further and more complete.

After working at 3d-workshop and digital space for 3 and a half weeks, I finished my works. Tired but enjoy blood, sweat and tear, but I am really enjoying the process at this moment. Although 3d is not easy, 3d printing always makes me collapse. Finally, I really love 3d models, whatever modifying or building, 3d-model making is one of my favorite and most excited parts during the process of my project. All of my printed objects are really small, that are lucky charms for gig economy — 4 classes of people, in order to bring good luck to them. Finally, I got 4 objects and an audio as well, which includes some funny things from all of my experience of chatting with Uber drivers and Deliveroo riders, and was edited by me. I am really really really tired and sleepy now…. come back soon….


To be honest, I really like this project. However, without any experience about 3d printing, I spent too much time on 3d workshop and research. I stayed at workshop for almost a month and every day after arriving at home, I was too tired to do anything except sleeping. Because of lacking knowledge of 3d printing and CNC router, I should do some research about how 3d printer works, how to prepare the 3d file of models, what kind of requirement of 3d files, how long does 3d printing take…so that I can save time to document all evidence well. Furthermore, I was not good at making a time table and following it. Although some of my coursemates taught me how to make it and I actually made one, but I always self-indulgence so that I was not really strictly following time table, but that brought me a sense of guilty, I was entangled with guilty so that I felt really anxious and reduce the efficiency of working. That is a really bad habit and is the further thing I need to overcome.

Final objects display and reflection


Welcome back to my diary about Uber taking again. I’ve to say, sometimes, Uber taking’s not easy, especially at WechatIMG1.jpegsome crowded places with heavy traffic. That’s really difficult to drivers finding you and you find drivers as well. However, this terrible thing happened twice today before I arrived at uni. After these journeys were cancelled by drivers, I found this guy. After talking with him during the journey, I know more things about Uber.

He was from The West Affric, as a Uber driver as his second job, and he told me if he’s not a permanent residence, he can’t get the Uber licence. Mini cabs can’t have any advertisement on them because of government policy, but black taxis can. The companies of these advertisements will pay for The government, the government controls black taxis and drivers as well and tell them what to do or not to do. That’s too controllable. So the licences of Black drivers which were got from the government, are different from Uber driver licences. However, for the black taxi drivers, they could not decide what to do because they work with the government, but for Uber drivers, they are much more flexible, that’s why the government swipes and fights Uber. That makes me associated with my last journey, the driver also believes that this job is flexible. For the job, Uber will take 20% of each income. Similarly, the government will take some part of income from black taxis. If you would like to join the black taxi, you must finish three years training and knowledge frame before you get that, but for Uber drivers, you just need to have your driving licence and driving experience for three years. Then I showed him my ritual objects for him and hung it on him a smart mirror. He really likes the 3D car models, which are a mirror hanging lucky charm in the car and a tissue box. That are the lucky charms for Uber drivers who were from West Affric. He’s looking forward to getting a new one that I will print later.

Finally, I finished my journey and felt really nice.


FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE — CNC router experiment

For printing a bigger model, I tried CNC router. This machine printed objects are rougher that 3d-printed objects. The materials could be wood or foam, but the tool is not long, so the file in CNC could not deep, so I must cut my car in the middle into two sides. Then put your foam into this machine, stick on the board and clamp it tightly avoiding moving. Then, tell the machine where the foam is and where need to start first, tell machine everything about how deep it need to go and the size of the tool itself. It looks like teach primary school students.Then it will start and you need to close the door before it starts, then you can see the flying swarf.

After half an hour seeing the tool cycling looping from left to right, I got my half model. Then I did another half. I found I didn’t cut them in the middle even it looked like in the middle, the right one is a little bit thicker than the left one. So I mirrored the right one and printed one more. After I got whole models, I started sanding it with sand paper, and glued them with PVA in order to make them harder.

Finally, I made a tissue box for Uber drivers as a lucky charm.

From theory to practice — 3D model-making, modifying, rebuilding, printing and reflection

After I decided to make some communication objects as my final outcome of my project, I was thinking about 3d printed objects. That is a good website— Thingiverse, which has lots of free 3d models on it. What I need to do is pick models, download them and put them together in order to make new and wired things. My first experience of 3d-model-modifying was about a burger and a mask. I needed to match them together, but I never use 3d programmes before. So after I ask lots of tutors like IDA and IDC technicians, animation tutor,…, I downloaded Maya, Meshmixer, Sketchup, but I still could not do it. I thought that’s really easy and I can finish all of the objects within two minutes, but…3d’s not actually easy. TRUST ME! DO NOT DO IT JUST ONE DAY BEFORE THE DEADLINE! I started to find other helpers. Luckily, I found a friend which just graduated from BA Moving image at Central St.Martin this June. He helped me making 2 models which are burger mask and horn Toyota.

I thought everything was done until I printed them. Because the original files were downloaded, some of them were rendered and used in animation, so there are lots of issues in these files so that I need to repair them before printing like lettuces are too thin, wheels are too detailed, etc. I found the size of Toyota is too big(170MB) because three same cars overlap with each other(in C4d, if meshing two components to one object, the programme will generate a new object which includes two components covering the old things rather than directly combine two parts, that’s why… ). The moving image guy’s really busy on daily life, therefore I must learn how to edit them in Cinema 4D. It’s not easy for me. Luckily, a C4d expert at digital space of my uni—Macco, taught me how to edit models in C4D, like rotate, zoom in/out, move, combines parts to one object, and separates one to several parts, build models, add effects, etc. Finally, I finished the models of burger mask and horn Toyota and printed Burger and Toyota as experimental.

The burger looks like a macaron rather than a burger, so I added more layers in the burger in order to make it thicker and looked like a big MAC much more rather than a Macaron.

For the car, I figured out the reason why it was really rough because of too many details inside of the car. If I want to make the surface of the car rather than the structure, I need to delete all of the details inside. I also need to change the position and shape of the horn because it looks too normal now. So I put the horn at the front of the car and curved it for making the car looks more like a Rhinoceros. That’s going to be really wired. For the ‘burger mask’, I need to make the burger bigger so that making it more strange and likes a gas mask much more.

After that, I started to edit other two models, Bats drone and Doorbell camera. I’ve to say the best way for model users, is building them rather than downloading. The models of downloading always faulty. Looking at the camera, I cannot move the anchor point close to the camera, or the camera passed over the Axis point, but it should be keeping relatively static with the point. It must have some hidden things, thus I need to rebuild a new camera. Firstly, I need a cube and a cylinder; then add effect of boole on the cylinder, and how many cylinders you have that how many booble effect you need to match with. Finally, with Macoo’s help (sorry I was sleeping for a little while when he was helping me, I was really sleepy), the cube looked like a CCTV camera. That’s really funny and I loves 3d models now. To be honest, these models still have some issues but I have passion this time, so everything is enjoyable.

However, because of moving these cylinders, after I exported the file, there’s a big hole on the camera that not printable and I must fix it. I spent two hours but could not done. So Macco helped me making a new one and recording the process with quiet time. Here are two links below about how to building models. Hope them help.(Special thanks: Macco) For the model of bats drone, it’s much more easier to match them together. Then I printed them. Anyway, I love C4d!!!!!!

For the Bats drone, the bats are too thin to break, so I need to modify the model or change another 3d printer. Doorbell’s really nice,without a camera inside.(Thanks Tom!)

So I went back edited models again. I downloaded a new model of drone and deleted something not necessarily, repaired some holes on these bats and put 4 bats on the drone finally.

Then I printed them again. I tried to print them as big as possible, like the mask, I tried to print a full size of real mask, but for the limitation of the 3D printer, the maximum is going to be 26cm*26cm*26cm, and for lucky charms, they could be really really huge like a statue or really really small like a mirror hanging or necklaces. That’s why I printed a small version of the mask with PLA.

For the materials, I was considering about resin because of more delicate but the price of it is really high(£125/L) and much more complicated than PLA printing. What’s more, if I print the car with 5cm*8cm*6cm, it will spend 23hrs, but the orange machine maximum can be launched last for 7 hrs or must be released. For the reflection so far is : 3d’s not easy but funny, if I have enough time, that is will be better! After printing them, I still need to remove all of supports and sand objects. That may hurt me.

I started my models from the 4th of Nov, I’ve not printed all of them welllllllll until now!!!! Come on!!!!!!! T^T…..

After printing the burger, I quiet like 3D printing and Woodfill as a kind of experimental material is not stable. I was thinking about if I use it to print a burger, it may more look like bread. So I decide to compare PLA with Woolfill through printing burgers. Here are two burgers with different materials.  Without support, Woodfill’s more rough than PLA.

From theory to practice — 3D printing 1- burger and 3d-printer introduction

I printed a burger today as testing. It’s my first-time use 3d printer. That was amazing! I need to export the 3d model as ‘STL’ format and put the file into Netfabb first to check if there’s any issue in the file or not. If there is, you need to repair the file first, change each red polygon to green so that finished repair. These wires are PLA material and Woodfill (another material with wood). The Ultimaker2 works for PLA and Woodfill, the orange machine works for Resin that really expensive. After fixing the burger, I printed it, but it looks like a Macaron. More 3d printed objects coming soon, following me and see what happens next.img_6745-copy
