Welcome back to my diary about Uber taking again. I’ve to say, sometimes, Uber taking’s not easy, especially at some crowded places with heavy traffic. That’s really difficult to drivers finding you and you find drivers as well. However, this terrible thing happened twice today before I arrived at uni. After these journeys were cancelled by drivers, I found this guy. After talking with him during the journey, I know more things about Uber.
He was from The West Affric, as a Uber driver as his second job, and he told me if he’s not a permanent residence, he can’t get the Uber licence. Mini cabs can’t have any advertisement on them because of government policy, but black taxis can. The companies of these advertisements will pay for The government, the government controls black taxis and drivers as well and tell them what to do or not to do. That’s too controllable. So the licences of Black drivers which were got from the government, are different from Uber driver licences. However, for the black taxi drivers, they could not decide what to do because they work with the government, but for Uber drivers, they are much more flexible, that’s why the government swipes and fights Uber. That makes me associated with my last journey, the driver also believes that this job is flexible. For the job, Uber will take 20% of each income. Similarly, the government will take some part of income from black taxis. If you would like to join the black taxi, you must finish three years training and knowledge frame before you get that, but for Uber drivers, you just need to have your driving licence and driving experience for three years. Then I showed him my ritual objects for him and hung it on him a smart mirror. He really likes the 3D car models, which are a mirror hanging lucky charm in the car and a tissue box. That are the lucky charms for Uber drivers who were from West Affric. He’s looking forward to getting a new one that I will print later.
Finally, I finished my journey and felt really nice.
Based on last two journeys, these two drivers could not understand anxiety, so I try to find a British driver. I tried 5 times and looped request and cancel but no driver looks like a British. Then I gave up with full of confusion. I requested one more and not cancel it. This is my new journey which is really an amazing one. Before I started my journey, I spent almost 20 mins to find the Uber. Although he called me, with a strong accent, and asked me if I can see two police cars next to the entrance of King’s cross railway station, he’s in the middle of two cars, but I still could not find him. I turned around two police cars again and again and lost my patience already. I asked him if I can cancel it because I couldn’t find him and I couldn’t clearly hear his voice on the phone, and couldn’t recognise ‘g-red’ card is ‘red’ or ‘grey’…..To my surprise, he still patiently explained to me where he was. Finally, he saw me. I was between at two police cars, but he’s in a red car and opposite with me at another side of the street…..This guy was from East Africa, arrived in London from 20 years ago. He thinks Uber is a good and safety platform for drivers. He worked as a driver for another company which is cash only for payment, some bad passengers don’t pay for the journey after arriving at destinations, oppositely, everything pay with cards now, so he doesn’t need to worry about that anymore. What’s more, in the past, passengers and drivers were strangers with each other because they know nothing about each other, they can do anything for you without any protection, but now If you want to use Uber, you must sign up first with your Identity. That looks much more safety. About anxiety, just based on his bad experience. It happened last month, he lost one of his phones (he has two phones, one for navigation, another one for…), which was stolen by one of the youth passengers who sat at co-pilot just next to the driver, the youth even used the phone calling to oversea so that the driver received a £400 bill need to pay. The driver’s really angry so he gave that guy 1-star rating. He earned several pounds from that journey but need to cost around £300 to get a new smartphone. He said not only drivers care about good rating, the passengers also need. If a guy has a low rating of Uber, like one star, there will no driver accept him, because he may a bad person. So bad rating could influence drivers and passengers as well. He still worried about taking bad passengers, they may give him bad rating or bad experience and mood. He’s got Permanent residence because he’s country not good even put him into prison so he applied protection policy here and doesn’t want to go back. I asked him why not become a Black taxi driver after he told me the income from Black taxi is three times at least as that from Uber. He said you must spend 3 years for learning knowledge in order to get a licence of the black taxis, that’s quite difficult. What’s more, in the past, the government only accept the British for Black taxi drivers. Okay, that’s policy. To sum up, I spent half an hour on this journey and knew more things about Uber, feels good.
After the first journey, I reflected myself, if the questions I asked are so direct? ‘anxiety’ sometimes make people confused and make them lose in rather than help them find the answer. Some anxieties are really so hidden that people could not realise them or people never think about the base of anxiety or make it as a habit. So if I could not directly get the answer, I was thinking about how to figure out and discover some useful information that what kind of things the Uber drivers really care about from content of dialogues, chatting with them. I started to request a Uber after I got off the tube at Bank station. First, I got a Uber, but he’s a deaf or dumb I forgot. I need to do my research and talk to the driver. So I immediately cancel it and that’s my first-time cancel Uber, feels nice……Luckily, I got another Uber within 1 minute, so I took TOYOTA PRIUS starting my new Uber journey.
This quiet guy was from Mxxx(sorry I forgot), which is one of the countries in Europ, staying in London almost 5 years. He became a Uber driver from last month as a second job for earn more money, but his first job is a chief which always needs to work from 3’o clock in the morning until 10 am, after that, he will start his second job until 5 or 6pm then go back home, and on weekends, he’ll spend much more time for driving. He thinks Uber’s good and the salary of chiefs not enough, that’s why he started become a Uber driver. He is even going to quit the chief and develop Uber for a full-time driver, and he decided to buy a new car even though the car that he driving now is not bad. Affluence! If that’s truth, can Uber drivers earn more money than chiefs in London? I’m not sure. He has several Uber friends those are from Europ. When I asked him about anxiety, he cannot really understand what I want to know, even I asked him five times during the trip. Again, he’s nothing need to worried about driving. What surprised most is he didn’t mind ratings, whatever 4 stars or 5 stars. I heard some drivers direct asked for 5 stars from passengers except him so far. I asked him about his first job because it sounds really tired, but he actually made it as a habit in past five years. I knew I have so many silly questions need to ask, and sometimes make my friends unhappy, but this guy still gave me five stars when finishing the journey and not unhappy with me….to my surprise. Thank you so much. To sum up, I spent almost 15 mins for this journey from Bank station to the south bank university, feels nice.
It’s my first time taking Uber. I excited waited at the entrance of my accommodation. I saw a Mercedes-Benz E-Class was driven towards me. I asked the driver: ‘hey, are you a Uber drive?'(It too abnormal) However, I should ask:’ Is your driving licence number xxxxx?’. Anyway, I took it and spoke to the driver. His first job is a driver for big vans, and the second job is a Uber driver for the minicab. For his second job, he always works from 6pm to 11pm. I thought Uber drivers care about getting five stars for good rating and if the stars under 4.7, drivers will be sacked. To my surprise, his guy prefers good feedback or comment. He believes that if passengers give him five stars and good feedback like ‘good Uber drivers, or good journey of taking Uber’, that’s a higher rating than just get five stars, and if he has some requirement, Uber will satisfy him. That’s really interesting. I showed my prototype for him and asked him if believe that he can get good rating after touching the prototype. Unfortunately, he lost all patience and told me he must leave at that moment. Typically, he doesn’t believe the rough metal wire prototype that I made. What’s made me more disappointed, he can’t understand ‘anxiety’ so he told me he’s no anxiety. ..So, I failed this time. The first Uber journey just lasted for 10 minutes, feels not too bad.
Today night, I met a Deliveroo rider at Mamuśka, a Polish Kitchen and Bar around Elephant and castle after I finished my dinner here. I spoke to him. He really enjoyed the job as a deliveroo rider, but he always could not understand what I asked him. I asked him if he has something worried about when delivering food. He said if I want to make orders I can do that from the app….finally, he really hurried to deliver food at that moment so I just said goodbye to him.
Sadly went back home, I was really disappointed because I got nothing new information today from deliveroo riders. I started searching online and tried to find something useful. Luckily, I found useful links about the review and some personal experience diary from deliveroo riders. Here are two of all links below.
From those links, I
I found a new class of people in Post-digital culture—drone drivers, which is really popular now. Luckily, I found one of my coursemates who was training for a licence of drone driver. So I asked him about if there are something really important for them or they really care about when driving. This guy told me some anxiety: 1, the drone will go off when were flying too high even it has GPS; 2, some drivers flying them indoor, it may damage itself because that’s really easy to crash on the wall or hit on some hanging things; 3, there are so many rules for drone drivers that really hard to follow them…After I did some second research, I knew more things about drone drivers. Like some rule about the distance to people, you must keep
What a really lucky day today. I met three Deliveroo riders at least within 10 minutes. Unfortunately, they were hurried in delivering and my interview was too directly. So we didn’t have a long conversation. I got two anxieties this time. The guy from the west Affric always delivers food by cycling said, the weather in London is really cold now, so It’s really hard to keep food warm when they arrived. The company of Deliveroo never require them must do it and no punishment if the food becomes cold, but he thought about if he’s a guest, he prefers hot food and he wants his guests happy. So that’s the only one thing that he worried about. One guy worried about delivering food on time. He rides a motorcycle rather than a cycling, and a little bit big. It’s really hard to shuttle in the crowd when sometimes the road’s really narrow and lots of passengers, that will make him late and that’s why he worried about it. One more thing is food may be damaged or spilt because of the unflatness road. Thank you guys and good luck.
